• Work Package 1. Site selection & characterization, plant-screening trials

    • Botanical survey in Lavreotiki peninsula in order to identify possible endemic and/or rare plant species and ensure the biodiversity of the area
    • Site characterization and pedo-climatic description
    • Screening pot trials to evaluate the tolerance and the uptake ability of improved varieties of hemp, flax and kenaf to heavy metals and metalloids (HM&M)
  • Work Package 2. Sustainable cultivation strategies for optimum phytoremediation

    • Pilot field establishment in Lavreotiki/contaminated site and in Aliartos /control field. Evaluation of the most tolerant to HM&M varieties selected in WP1
    • Assessment of the effects of mycorrhiza on plant uptake ability
    • Crop cultivation and measurements of morphometric and physiological parameters, yield, HM&M concentration in plant tissues.
    • Development of a Guide for Best Practices for the phytoremediation of contaminated sites using hemp, flax and kenaf.
  • Work Package 3. Use of lignocellulosic materials in added-value applications

    • Production of particleboards. Comparison with panels prepared with unpolluted material, as well as typical particleboards from wood.
    • Production of insulation panels. Use of bio-resin in order to develop an innovative process of manufacturing bio-based insulation panels.
  • Work Package 4. Sustainability assessment

Integrated sustainability assessment covering the three pillars of sustainability aspects:

    • Environmental impacts (LCA),
    • Economic effectiveness (e-LCA)
    • Social and rural development issues (S-LCA)
